Gender Inclusive Housing

The Office of Residential Life offers gender inclusive housing, where interested students may select a room space, suite, or campus apartment regardless of sex, gender identity and/or gender expression. Gender inclusive housing aims to be an option for students who would feel more comfortable living with someone outside of their designated sex and/or someone with a similar gender identity. Residential Life is devoted to providing a safe, inclusive, and supportive living experience for all University of Minnesota Morris students.

Gender inclusive housing is for interested students through voluntary participation. You can share your double sleeping room, suite, or apartment with a roommate or roommates regardless of sex, gender identity, and/or gender expression.

Returning students

You and your roommate(s) of choice simply need to select each other as roommates during the housing sign-up process. If you want to live in a gender inclusive room, apartment, or suite, but don’t currently have a roommate preference, you can select gender inclusive housing and will be placed with another student who selects gender inclusive housing without regard to sex, gender identity and/or gender expression.

New students

You can select gender inclusive housing and will be placed with another student who selects gender inclusive housing without regard to sex, gender identity and/or gender expression.

If you have a preferred roommate with whom you would like to be placed, please contact the Office of Residential Life at housing2@morris.umn.edu or by calling 320-589-6475.

How are roommate pairings made?

Students interested in gender inclusive housing are encouraged to self-select roommates who are also interested in gender inclusive housing when possible. For those interested in gender inclusive housing who do not have a specific roommate in mind, you will be placed with another student who has indicated a similar desire to live in gender inclusive housing. If students have information they want the office of residential life to consider when making roommate pairings, we encourage students to share that information in the space provided on the online application or to contact the Office of Residential Life.

If I am assigned to gender inclusive housing and no longer want that option, can I change?

Yes, students can request a room change at any time (note that there may be limitations depending on the time of year and if there is available space). If a roommate leaves the unit, the remaining residents will be given the option to find another roommate of their choosing or buy out the space as a single. If the remaining roommates are open to having another roommate, they will be consulted on whether the unit should continue to be designated gender inclusive or change to a traditional same-sex unit before a new resident would be asssigned.

Are there extra costs for gender inclusive housing?

No, costs are based on the residence hall and room type.

Will any students be assigned to gender inclusive housing without knowing?

No. Only students who intentionally select gender inclusive housing are assigned to gender inclusive housing.

Who can I contact if I have further questions?
